ELON, NC — LatinxEd, a statewide nonprofit dedicated to educational equity and leadership development for Latine communities, released a statement today following the North Carolina General Assembly’s votes to override Governor Josh Stein’s vetoes on key legislation related to immigration.
The overridden bills, including HB 318 which disproportionately targets immigrant families, contain measures that community leaders say will further marginalize and endanger Latine families across the state.
Official Statement from LatinxEd:
Seeking a Better Path Forward for North Carolina
At LatinxEd, we believe that policy decisions should bring people together, not push communities further to the margins. Yesterday’s veto overrides by the North Carolina General Assembly are deeply troubling. Bills that limit inclusion, infringe on constitutional rights, and target immigrant communities do not reflect the priorities of many North Carolinians, including the Latine students and families we serve. Instead of investing in our children, our educators, and our working families, legislative leaders chose politics over people.
These bills do not diminish the facts that our communities are resilient, and we will remain steadfast in advocating for equitable education, inclusive policies, and investments that strengthen, not undermine, our future.
LatinxEd remains committed to constructive dialogue, civic engagement, and policy solutions that center the voices of those most affected. We call on our elected officials to re-engage with communities directly impacted by these decisions. Let’s build solutions together, ones that uplift rather than divide.
Elaine Utin, Executive Director and Co-Founder of LatinxEd, added:
“We are heartbroken but we are not surprised. These votes reinforce what our communities have long felt: that their voices are often ignored in the policymaking process. At LatinxEd, we will continue to create space for Latine students, families, and leaders to be heard, seen, and respected. Now more than ever, we need bold, human-centered leadership that values every North Carolinian, not just the privileged few.”
LatinxEd encourages educators, advocates, and elected officials across the political spectrum to engage in meaningful dialogue and policymaking that centers those most impacted. The organization remains committed to fostering educational opportunity, civic participation, and leadership development in communities across the state.
